FOO FIGHTERS CLUBGIG @ THE SCALA

London 4th March 2000

No one will argue that the Foo Fighters are one of the finest live acts around, so it's usually a big event when they come to play a gig, here in London last time about 4 month ago when they completely sold out Brixton Academy. Now it was different. The band was just in London and had their gear here, so when MTV wanted them to play some live tracks for a special feature, they decided to do this in form of a small club gig, rather than just in a TV studio.

I had big luck to get a ticket, very big luck indeed, someone in front of the venue actually gave me a ticket for free ;)  So lets see what happened at this 'secret gig' from the point when I get in:

Inside the Scala it isn't as full as expected, and although its just 20 minutes before showtime, only few fans are waiting before the stage already. It doesn't really look as if the Foo Fighters would come on stage now, only the TV cameras around make you expect something to happen. A guy comes on stage and announces that the bars are going to close now and the people should please come a bit closer to the stage, which is a bit unusual at a gig, especially if such a top band is playing!

Dave Grohl Foo Fighters

There is no support act and punctually at 7.30 pm they enter the stage and kick off a brilliant show indeed. Remarkably is how much crowd contact Dave has since its such a small gig. About five people start to shout 'Dave, Dave' and he goes: 'this isn't Jerry Springer here' and of course this makes everyone shout 'Jerry, Jerry' now ;)  One song later he spots someone in the audience who looks like Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and keeps pointing him out.

Musicially the gig completely rocks and the band looks as if they enjoy playing. 'Learn to fly' is one of the first tracks that gets played along with all the other 'hits' and the tracklist reminds me of their Brixton show. A special highlight of the gig is when Dave grabs the drumsticks and drummer Taylor Hawkins the microphone and they perform a cover of Pink Floyds 'have a cigar' which ends with them both behind the drums! Later in the set Dave announces that they will be playing this years Reading Festival plus hopefully be back here for some headline gigs even before that! 'of course we should be headlining though..' he means, and we all can nothing but agree :)

Foo Fighters live

The 90 minute set is over very soon and ends with 'This is a call', so watch out for that MTV special!
