Stereo Festival San Juan

by neko:

March 18th, San Juan, Puerto Rico

It's about 28 degrees outside, and I spent most of the day at the beach on the Caribbean Sea, met my sister for the first time in 4 months (she's working in the area at the moment) and we're now off to see the Prodigy, for the first time in 3 months for me as well. Pretty good day I'd say!

The Stereo festival is the first 'modern music festival' in this country, and is headlined by The Prodigy tonight.  We get there around 10pm and walk a bit around the nice site, it's pretty spread out, but in a really nice way, with lots of palm tress and stuff, looks very tropical and exotic. There are a couple of international acts on, such as Junkie XL and Optical & Ed Rush, however else it's mainly local stuff I have never heard of.

The main area where Prodigy are playing is this absolutely cool amphitheatre type stage. So there's a small standing area and then surrounding it steps leading upwards in a half circle giving a great view of the stage.

So we have a couple of drinks and then at 11:30pm Prodigy come on... The reaction is pretty cool, all the kids are going mad, throwing around their green glow sticks. We're watching the show from the steps and it's an amazing view, overlooking it all and still close to the stage. The airport is nearby and we're right on the flight path, so every now and again there's a plane flying right over the stage, which looks very cool too. And obviously it's a nice and warm summer night here, so the setting overall couldn't be nicer.

The band are great too. I don't know whether it's just because I haven't seen them live for so long (3 months), but this gig is just getting me so back into it. The sound is amazing as well, and the set list goes like this:

Break & Enter
Their Law
Wake The Fuck Up
Breathe
Hotride
Spitfire
Back to School
Firestarter
Action Radar
Warning
No Good
Voodoo People

Poison
Diesel Power Beats
SMBU
OOS

This isn't much new compared to the UK Their law tour, but don't forget the Best Of album has now just been released in the USA, so a similar set list has been expected. There's definitely a bit of variation too in some of the fills played between the tracks and for example the ending to OOS sounded different (although this could have been a mistake). Overall the band are great as ever, and with this just being the first gig on this tour, I am looking forward to what's to come on the rest of this tour.  I'll keep you posted.
