By 'Rocksound' already called 'the next big thing' the Soundisciples from Bristol (UK) have just released their debut   album 'undefined' and have recently joined up with Pitchshifter and Janus Stark for a UK tour.

I got to know Soundisciples as they were supportact for Janus Stark and Pitchshifter on their UK tour in April 99. At the first gig (Brighton, 7th April 99) I was more than sceptical, I was so excited to see Janus Stark, that I wasnt really interested to see this 'other' Supportband. They started to play, and I liked it. At the 2nd gig I liked it even more and so I decided to buy their album 'undefined'.

Listening to this album I realized that I've just 'discovered' a great new cool band! Now I was really looking forward to seeing them again at the next 3 dates!  (see tourreview )

ALBUM

'undefined' (1999) is the debut album of Bristols Soundisciples and its just great!

It is really difficult to describe 'what kind of' music they are making (actually most of the bands I like are...). There is a lot of dance elements, mixed with a lot of guitar, bass and those kinda creepy, darkish lyrics; it's a cooperation between drums and sampler, combined with a heavy sound and catching melodies. To make it simple I could say a mix between Techno and Metal, but actually there is more, their sound is, in my opinion, very unique. Some magazine compared them with The Prodigy, but although I'm a big fan of The Prodigy, I have to disagree with that!

It is the kind of music you first have to listen twice, but then suddenly like it and cant stop to listen to it. Or you dont like it at all if it isnt your taste!

Highlights of the album are 'jesus biting nails' (my god, its true, flesh is the only thing I feel for you, I feel like jesus biting nails...), 'let it rain''chaos in motion' (with additional guitar by Gizz Butt, yes, THE Gizz Butt we all know as singer and guitarplayer for Janus Stark), 'heroin'  and definitely 'Withdraw from life' (with cuts from DJ Matt Orren).

If you go to listen to this album in the shop, take your time, listen to it twice. You may find it difficult the first time you hear it, but thats probably cause you havent heard that kind of music before. Its the kind of music you still find new elements in after you heard it 100times....well, if you like that kind of music, of course....

LIVE + PICS

OxSD2.jpg (45545 bytes) I 've see Soundisciples live 5 times during their UK tour with Pitchshifter and Janus Stark in April 99.

At those gigs you could see that the crowd was always very sceptical in the beginning, cause almost noone has heard of them yet, but after a few songs the people got to like them!!

Most of the people who have been to one of those shows said they liked them very much! In the days after those shows the Pitchshifter messageboard was full of people asking for information about 'that 1st supportband'.

Soundisciples did great at those shows in the small clubs (like on the picture in the Oxford Zodiac), playing in front of 200-800 people.

But still, I think they would really fit to play some festivals.

We'll see what this summer brings!!

Read the reviews about the tour with Janus Stark and Pitchshifter.
